Lena Fernkopf, eighth grader at Jackson Heights Middle School, was chosen as one of fourteen finalists to record her essay entitled, "Our Future Depends on Me." The contest was sponsored by Kansas Action for Children and was open to all 7th and 8th graders across the state of Kansas. The essays were to focus on one of three areas: Health, Education, or Financial Stability. Lena chose to write about education and the need for quality education for all children. The fourteen finalists recorded their essays at the Kansas Public Radio Station on the KU campus in Lawrence. The essays started airing on March 11 and will continue until June 10, 2009, at 6:35 am on 91.5 FM. Cheryl Stanley, Lena's teacher, submitted her essay. Lena is the daughter of Kyle and Janet Fernkopf, Circleville, and the granddaughter of Marvin and Mary Lou Stous, Holton, and Allen and Mary J. Fernkopf, Cirlceville. Congratulations, Lena! |
