Margaret Mead once stated, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” This is certainly the case with our Johnsonville videotaping on Sept. 23. A small group of amazing Cobra fans helped to pull everything together in a short period of time. There are many people to thank. Thank you to the Cobra Backers for cooking and serving the meal, Student Council for their work with homecoming coronation changes, the high school cheerleaders for planning a great pep rally, art students for painting the Cobra on the field and doing the artwork on our driveway, Tyler Ahlgren for an outstanding song, Janice Mulroy, Kay Smith, Joyce Cochren, Paul Lierz, Lyle Alley, Gary Keehn, and Mark Fenton for their help with after-school activities, Vern Andrews for providing video coverage to the Topeka Capital-Journal and a BIG thanks to Tim Ahlgren for nominating our district for this opportunity. Remember that voting takes place Oct. 17-28 at www.johnsonville.com/spiritville. The school with the most votes and highest scoring from the videos will win $10,000 for their athletic department as well as a cookout with the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill. We need everyone’s support to be declared the winners of the Spiritville Contest, so please get online to vote and show your Cobra Spirit! Other items of interest include: High School Gym Floor - Work will be done on the dead spots in our gym floor Oct. 18-Nov. 1, so our floor will be in tip top condition for basketball season. This means that the middle school girls’ basketball games scheduled for Oct. 24 and Oct. 31 will be played at the elementary school instead of at the high school. Parent-Teacher Conferences - First quarter conferences are on Oct. 20 and 21. Please make time to visit with your child’s teacher. It is critical for parents and teachers to be partners in the education process to ensure student success. District Enrollment - As many of you know, Sept. 20 is Count Day for schools across the state of Kansas. We have 212 students in the elementary school and 180 students in the high school and middle school. We have decreased 10 students from 2010-11 enrollment, but the good news is we can use last year’s figures for budget purposes. — Adrianne McDaniel, Superintendent & Elementary School Principal

Wow! We have had a wonderful start to our school year and are quickly approaching the end of our first quarter. Hope you all can schedule a time to visit with your child’s classroom teacher on Oct. 20 or Oct. 21! Communication and support from home are so important for student success. Mrs. Kristi Altenburg was recognized at the Kansas Teacher of the Year banquet in Topeka on Sept. 18. She was one of 22 elementary candidates who were nominated in region 2. We are extremely proud of her for the way she represented Jackson Heights Elementary and USD 335. Other things I would like to update you on are: Technology-Thank you to the PTO for purchasing a SMARTboard and projector for the elementary music room! Our K-6 students will get to enjoy this great tool during music in addition to their classrooms thanks to your generosity and hard work with fundraising. Student Activities - All students will get the chance to go through the book fair this month. Once again, 5th graders have been given the opportunity to participate in Starbase. The students have already gone three times and will also go again on Oct. 3 and 14. Students in 5th and 6th grades will present a band and vocal concert Oct. 17 in the high school gym. I have two other reminders that I’d also like to give everybody. First, if you need to make different after-school arrangements for your son or daughter, please contact the elementary office by 2:45. Notes are delivered to classrooms at 2:45 in an effort to ensure all children are doing the right thing after school. Secondly, if you haven’t had the chance already, please be sure and check out the elementary classroom blogs on our district website by clicking on the parents tab and selecting elementary staff email and homepages. Then you can choose any homepage to view. — Adrianne McDaniel, Superintendent and Elementary Principal
